DTCC digital asset tokenization service launch
Overview
In October 2026, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) officially launched its DTC Tokenization Service (DTS) through its subsidiary, the Depository Trust Company (DTC). This initiative, authorized by a December 2025 SEC No-Action Letter, allows financial institutions to convert securities held at its depository into digital tokens and back to facilitate on-chain settlement.
The service enables the creation of ‘digital twins’—tokenized representations of real-world assets such as U.S. Treasuries, ETFs, and select large-cap stocks from the Russell 1000 index. Initially, the service supports 34 different assets representing an estimated $30 trillion in market value. These tokens are backed 1:1 by the underlying securities held at DTC, ensuring that investors retain the same ownership rights, economic entitlements, and protections as traditional book-entry securities. The goal is to enhance liquidity, collateral mobility, and capital efficiency by allowing assets to be moved between traditional and tokenized forms around the clock, with a target conversion process of 15 minutes or less.
Currently, the service utilizes a dual-chain strategy involving the Canton Network and a Besu-based private blockchain, with plans to integrate networks such as Stellar and Circle’s Arc by 2027. To date, 20 major institutional participants have signed access agreements, including Bank of America, J.P. Morgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, Fidelity Investments, UBS, and Citadel Securities. Additionally, a Digital Assets Solutions Industry Working Group, including members such as Ondo Finance and Hashgraph, has been formed to address industry standards and interoperability.
