Dubai prepares aviation shift to Al Maktoum International Airport
Dubai is advancing plans to transition its primary aviation operations to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) as Dubai International (DXB) approaches maximum capacity. The new hub is designed to be five times larger than DXB, with a projected annual capacity of over 260 million passengers.
Major airlines flydubai and Emirates are preparing for the shift. flydubai is expected to begin a phased relocation from DXB to DWC by the start of 2027. To support this transition, existing facilities at Al Maktoum International are being expanded and modernized.
In coordination with this aviation expansion, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Airports are working to integrate road, public transport, and aviation networks. Discussions have focused on improving vehicle flow along key corridors and developing mass transit plans to support the Dubai South district and the rapid urban growth expected around the new airport.
