Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and Tony Award-winning Broadway composer, has died at age 56. His death occurred on Thursday night in a Manhattan hospital, surrounded by his family.
Sheik rose to international fame in 1996 with his hit single ‘Barely Breathing,’ which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. He later transitioned into a highly successful career in musical theater, most notably composing the music for the groundbreaking rock musical ‘Spring Awakening.’ For his work on that production, he won both Tony and Grammy Awards.
His family confirmed his passing via Instagram, describing him as a ‘singular talent’ and a ‘deeply influential voice in music and theater.’ Reports regarding the exact cause of death vary, with some sources citing organ failure and others reporting cardiac arrest following a period of critical health.
