Death of composer Duncan Sheik

Overview

Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and Tony Award-winning Broadway composer, died at age 56 at a Manhattan hospital. His death occurred on a Thursday night, reportedly following organ failure and cardiac arrest.

Sheik gained prominence in 1996 with the single ‘Barely Breathing’ from his self-titled debut album, a track that spent 55 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. He later achieved significant success in musical theater, most notably for co-creating the rock musical ‘Spring Awakening’ with lyricist Steven Sater. That production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, and earned a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. His other theatrical works include ‘American Psycho’ and ‘Alice by Heart’. His final studio album, ‘Claptrap’, was released in 2022.

Following his passing, his mother, Suzanne Sheik, confirmed the news. Family members described him as a ‘singular talent,’ while various colleagues and collaborators, including Lea Michele, Kimiko Glenn, and Melissa Barrera, shared tributes on social media to honor his musical legacy and impact on the Broadway community.

His death occurred just months before the 20th anniversary of ‘Spring Awakening’. In response to his passing, an Off-Broadway revival of the musical is scheduled to debut at Studios Seaview in New York. Directed by Danya Taymor, the production is set to run from November 27, 2026, through February 14, 2027, featuring a cast including Tyler Jordan Wesley, Ashlyn Maddox, and Ryo Kamibayashi.
