Duncan Sheik, ‘Spring Awakening’ composer, dies at 56

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and Tony Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik has died at the age of 56. His death occurred on Thursday night at a Manhattan hospital following organ failure and cardiac arrest, according to a statement from his family.

Sheik achieved significant commercial success in the 1990s with his self-titled debut album, featuring the hit single ‘Barely Breathing,’ which spent 55 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. He later transitioned into a highly acclaimed career in musical theater, most notably co-creating the musical ‘Spring Awakening’ with lyricist Steven Sater. The production won eight Tony Awards and helped launch the careers of several prominent performers.
