Duolingo sees rapid growth in Indonesia driven by educational demand

Duolingo has identified Indonesia as one of its five fastest-growing markets globally based on year-over-year active user growth. Data from the platform indicates that Indonesian learners are highly motivated by academic and professional advancement. Specifically, users in Indonesia rank first worldwide for citing “Support my education” as their primary motivation for learning a new language, being 37% more likely than the global average to study for educational purposes.

English remains the most popular language in the region, followed by Japanese and Chinese. The platform has noted a significant surge in interest in East Asian languages; for instance, the share of daily active users learning Chinese has nearly tripled since 2023. Indonesian learners also show a high tendency for concurrent study, being 4.15 times more likely than the global average to study English and Chinese simultaneously.

In a discussion at the company’s New York office, CEO and co-founder Luis von Ahn noted the importance of making quality education accessible. To support users aiming for professional fluency, Duolingo has expanded nine of its most popular courses to the B2 proficiency level and introduced AI-powered conversation practice features.
