Dutch cities activate cold weather emergency shelters
Municipalities in the Netherlands are activating emergency cold weather protocols to provide shelter for homeless individuals due to dropping temperatures.
In Helmond, the winter shelter at De Kamenij is opening early on November 3 to accommodate 65 people. This early activation, nearly a month ahead of the usual December 1 start date, responds to forecasted temperatures dropping below zero. The facility, managed by Stichting Maatschappelijke Opvang Helmond en omgeving in cooperation with the municipality, provides beds, warm meals, and washing facilities.
In Utrecht, the cold weather regulation will be in effect from November 5 to November 9. The shelter at Savannahweg can accommodate 200 people, supplemented by daytime services provided by the Salvation Army. Local officials noted that the demand for such services has been increasing, with nearly 1,000 unique individuals utilizing the shelter during the previous season.
