Dutch cities enforce night‑time bans to curb youth disorder

Police in Delft have stepped up surveillance around the Debussystraat, Brahmslaan and Lisztstraat after repeated complaints of late‑night noise, vandalism and illegal fireworks by groups of youths. The municipality, with mayor Alexander Pechtold labeling the area a security risk, has introduced fines of €170 after 22:00, increased patrols, youth‑work initiatives and home visits by wardens.

In Rotterdam, the De Esch neighbourhood now has a night‑time ban that makes it a criminal offence for anyone without a legitimate reason to be in the area between 23:00 and 05:00. Residents say the measure, which carries a fine, aims to stop persistent disorder such as street racing, drug use and prostitution. Council leader Schouten said, "Calm must return to De Esch and residents must feel comfortable and safe," and the ban will be reviewed after three months.
