Dutch municipal safety bans expand

In late July 2026 Dutch cities began imposing night‑time bans aimed at curbing youth‑driven disorder. Heerlen’s mayor ordered the closure of three houses in the Heerlen‑Noord district for twelve months after police uncovered hard drugs and weapons, citing a threat to public order. In Leiden, a house on Maartje Offerspad was shut for four weeks after a series of violent incidents, including an explosive device detonation and a prior stabbing. Both municipalities said the measures aim to protect residents and restore safety.

Together, these steps illustrate a broader municipal strategy that combines night‑time bans, property closures and targeted bans on individuals, using fines, increased patrols and temporary surveillance to address escalating public‑order concerns.
