Dutch communities organize litter cleanups and waste research

Local communities in the Netherlands are organizing initiatives to combat littering and study waste patterns.

In Harfsen, the Vereniging Groen en Leefbaar Harfsen is hosting a cleanup event titled ‘Harfsen Schoon’ on Saturday, October 10. The initiative aims to protect the rural landscape and prevent hazards to wildlife and livestock, such as cattle consuming metal waste. Participants will gather at the local supermarket at 8:30 AM to collect litter using provided materials.

In Dalfsen, a ‘litter safari’ is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, led by Dirk Groot, known as the ‘Zwerfinator’. Since 2016, Groot has researched litter by photographing and registering found items to help municipalities and government agencies identify problematic packaging. Participants in the Dalfsen event will use an app to document and photograph waste while cleaning, providing data to help the municipality implement more targeted prevention measures.
