Environmental conservation initiatives in the Netherlands

Overview

Environmental conservation and cleanup initiatives continue across various regions of the Netherlands. In Friesland, the ‘Skjin Wetter’ campaign has seen significant scale; between October 3 and October 10, 2026, approximately 1,840 volunteers from over 50 groups—including schools, canoe clubs, and local businesses—participated in removing litter from streets, embankments, and waterways.

During this period, participants emphasized the severe impact of cigarette butts, noting that a single butt can contaminate enough drinking water for one person for 1.5 years. This follows broader concerns regarding the estimated 7.1 billion cigarette butts that enter the Dutch environment annually.

In the Oosterschelde region, between Bruinisse and the Grevelingen, volunteers from the ‘Bende van het Strand’ reported thousands of small plastic filters washing up along the shores. There are concerns that local wildlife, including birds, fish, and seals, may ingest these plastics. While a similar accumulation of biofilters occurred in 2021, the origin of the current debris remains unknown, and local companies have denied responsibility.

Other ongoing efforts include habitat restoration in IJmuiden through the maintenance of toad pools, and community-led waste research in Harfsen and Dalfsen. In Dalfsen, ‘litter safaris’ utilize mobile applications to document waste, providing data to help municipalities implement targeted prevention measures.
