Dutch court considers detention extension for 33 Overasselt shooting suspects
A Dutch court is deciding this week whether to extend the pre-trial detention of 33 suspects involved in a violent shooting in Overasselt. The incident occurred during the night of August 31 to September 1, when an armed group moved through the village.
During the event, security guard Berry Leenders was shot and killed in front of the home of convicted drug criminal Jan G. A subsequent firefight with arriving police officers left two officers seriously injured. Following the incident, police arrested 35 individuals in Overasselt, Nijmegen, and along a highway in Limburg. The suspects represent various nationalities, including citizens from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Algeria, Libya, and Ukraine.
The suspects are collectively suspected of murder or manslaughter. The court is conducting hearings over three days to determine if the detention of the suspects should be extended for a maximum of 90 days. If the extension is granted, public hearings for long-term suspects may follow after the 90-day period.
