Overasselt armed gang attack and investigation

Overview

On September 1, a heavily armed, masked group of approximately 30 individuals launched a violent assault on a residence in Overasselt, Netherlands. The attack resulted in the death of 51-year-old security guard Berry Leenders and injuries to two police officers. Prosecutors described the group as an international criminal organization, and investigators believe the raid was a revenge operation related to a drug conflict involving cocaine trafficker Jos Leijdekkers.

As of September 6, the number of suspects in custody has risen to 35 following the arrest of a 26-year-old Belgian man in Amsterdam. Previously, 32 suspects—aged 16 to 32—had been brought before a judge facing charges of murder, manslaughter, and attempted murder. The intended target was reportedly 28-year-old Jan G., a man with prior drug convictions.

In the aftermath, police have conducted large-scale searches using metal detectors in fields and roads near the target residence, as well as a raid on a vacant house in Nederasselt. While some residents report a sense of returning calm, there has been public frustration regarding the lack of an NL-Alert during the incident. A fundraising campaign for Leenders’ family has increased its target to 22,000 euros. Additionally, a planned memorial service for the victim at the Carolus Magnus student association in Nijmegen was canceled due to safety considerations, despite police not issuing a formal negative advisory regarding the event.
