Dutch Court Sentences Syrian Interrogator to 26 Years for Crimes Against Humanity

A Dutch district court in The Hague sentenced a 58‑year‑old Syrian, identified as Rafiq al Q., to 26 years in prison for crimes against humanity. The court found he served as an interrogator for the pro‑Assad National Defense Force and, between 2013 and 2014, tortured, beat, suspended upside down, applied electric shocks and sexually abused detainees in Syrian detention centres.

The verdict was rendered under the principle of universal jurisdiction, allowing Dutch authorities to prosecute offenses committed abroad. Rafiq al Q. had sought asylum in the Netherlands in 2021 and was arrested in 2023. He denied the charges, claiming a conspiracy against him. The sentence follows a series of recent convictions of Syrian nationals in Europe for similar war‑crime allegations.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by European judiciaries to hold former Syrian regime officials accountable for systematic abuse during the civil war that began in 2011.
