Dutch Football Association to prosecute online racist abuse after World Cup loss

Following the Netherlands’ 2‑3 penalty defeat to Morocco in the World Cup round of 32 in Monterrey, the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) reported a surge of racist and discriminatory messages aimed at Black Dutch players Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville. The KNVB transferred the abusive posts to the public prosecutor for possible criminal action, stating that “there are limits, and there are consequences for those who violate those limits.” Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten said he expects the prosecutors to proceed to set an example. The association also announced an online discrimination reporting portal and said legal staff will review any content that could merit criminal investigation.

The incident follows previous cases of online hate directed at footballers after missed penalties, such as the 2021 European Championship, highlighting the KNVB’s commitment to a zero‑tolerance stance against racism in the sport.
