Dutch highways A12 and A28 reopen after bridge and lane repairs, easing traffic

The A12 motorway between Arnhem and the German border was fully reopened on the morning of May 6, a day ahead of schedule, after Rijkswaterstaat completed work on the IJsselbrug. All eight lanes are now usable, though night closures for additional asphalt work will continue from May 18 to 31. The seven‑week maintenance project had previously caused extensive congestion on the A12 and surrounding roads, with delays of up to an hour on May 6.

In a separate operation, Rijkswaterstaat carried out an emergency night repair on the A28 near Zwolle, allowing the previously closed peak‑hour lane to reopen on the morning of May 7. The damaged road surface had forced the lane’s closure, creating daily traffic jams that added more than thirty minutes to commuters’ journeys. The repair is expected to improve flow without causing significant overnight disruption, although a schedule for a permanent fix has not yet been announced.
