Overview

Summer 2026 road works continue to disrupt traffic across the Netherlands and Belgium.

The Merwedebrug (A27) remains a critical concern due to structural weaknesses in the bridge’s steel arch. Following a July 18 ban on vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, authorities conducted a large-scale enforcement operation from 17 August to 21 August. This operation targeted non-EU vehicles that are difficult to monitor via camera systems, resulting in 215 fines for trucks and touring cars. While the ban has reduced heavy vehicle traffic by over 97 percent, approximately 500 trucks still attempt to cross daily. Rijkswaterstaat intends to continue monitoring via digital registration and unannounced checks to reach the goal of zero heavy vehicle crossings.

Regional highway maintenance also continues. In Belgium, the A12 highway between Meise and Londerzeel has partially reopened; the direction toward Antwerp is fully accessible as of 27 August following concrete and asphalt repairs, with the Brussels-bound direction expected to reopen around 3 or 4 September.

In the Netherlands, the A59 is undergoing a full closure in both directions between the Hooipolder junction and the Waalwijk exit from 28 August to 31 August. These works are part of large-scale A27 improvements, including asphalt widening and viaduct maintenance. Motorists are advised to use detours via the A27, A58, and N65/A65. Other ongoing disruptions include night-time works on the A27 widening and previous closures on the A20, A58, A1, and A32.
