Dutch Housing Minister defends refugee priority for social housing
Dutch Housing Minister Elanor Boekholt-O’Sullivan has faced significant criticism following comments regarding the allocation of social housing. During an interview, the minister defended the policy of providing priority access to scarce social rental homes for recognized refugees and status holders.
When questioned about why young Dutch citizens, often referred to as “starters,” face long waiting lists and delayed independence, Boekholt-O’Sullivan stated that many young people “can still, or are allowed to, live with their parents.” She emphasized her guiding principle that “anyone who is allowed to and wants to live in the Netherlands gets a roof over their head.”
The remarks have sparked backlash from commentators and citizens who argue that the policy prioritizes foreign nationals over the native population. Critics have pointed to the long waiting periods for Dutch starters as a sign of systemic unfairness in the current housing market.
