Dutch leaders discuss AI safety and strategic defense

During a debate in the Dutch House of Representatives, Prime Minister Dick Jetten and opposition leader Geert Wilders expressed consensus regarding the risks and strategic necessity of artificial intelligence.

Jetten committed to exploring the establishment of an ‘AI safety institute’ in the Netherlands, similar to existing bodies in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Such an institution would be tasked with monitoring cybersecurity risks associated with AI. This follows previous investigations by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.

Wilders raised concerns about the potential for AI to be used as a weapon by adversaries such as China and Russia. He argued that the Netherlands must be capable of responding with ‘AI as a digital tank’ rather than solely focusing on tightening regulations for European companies.
