Dutch libraries extend opening hours in Apeldoorn and Groningen
The CODA Central Library in Apeldoorn will stay open later on Friday evenings, operating until 20:30 from 1 September 2026. This new schedule replaces the previous Tuesday‑evening opening, while weekday hours remain 09:00‑18:00 and weekend hours are unchanged.
In the municipality of Groningen, all neighborhood and village library branches will broaden their opening hours starting 17 August. The changes aim to strengthen the social base of the districts and align with the forthcoming Groninger Library Vision for 2036. Council members highlighted the goal of making libraries more accessible, especially as the new school year begins. Saturday openings face staffing and space‑access challenges that are still being addressed.
Both municipalities also introduced a free physical‑library membership for residents aged up to 27. Digital borrowing (e‑books and audiobooks) still requires a €45 annual fee due to publisher licensing rules.
