Netherlands: Defence Minister labels Russia an ‘enemy’
Dutch Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius has sparked diplomatic tension by labeling Russia as an ‘enemy’ rather than merely an ‘aggressor.’ During a parliamentary debate on the defense budget, she argued that the term ‘aggressor’ was no longer sufficient given the increasing threats of hybrid warfare, cyberattacks, and sabotage.
The Russian Embassy in The Hague has demanded an official clarification, questioning whether the statement represents the formal position of the Dutch government or a shift toward direct military confrontation. The embassy accused the minister of provocative rhetoric and warned that any threats to Russian security would receive a ‘swift and crushing response.’
In response, Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen clarified that while Russia remains the Netherlands’ ‘greatest security threat,’ there has been no change to official government policy. He noted that the government aims to avoid falling into a frame of escalation. Both ministers emphasized that the designation does not imply the Netherlands is currently at war with Russia, but rather reflects a new security reality.
