Netherlands municipalities implement varying local rules for fireworks ban

Following the implementation of the Safe New Year's Eve Act, various Dutch municipalities are establishing local policies regarding the national ban on F2-category consumer fireworks for the 2026-2027 transition.

Approaches vary significantly by region. In Tynaarlo and Dantumadiel, associations and foundations may apply for exemptions to host organized fireworks displays, provided they submit comprehensive safety plans. Conversely, the mayors of Lochem and Nijkerk have decided not to grant any local exemptions. Lochem cited difficulties in enforcing and monitoring the strict legal conditions, while Nijkerk noted insufficient time to develop local policy and concerns regarding liability, insurance, and supervision.

While F2 fireworks are banned for private citizens, F1-category fireworks, such as sparklers, remain legal. In Nijkerk, professional fireworks shows by certified companies are still permitted, and carbide shooting remains allowed under specific conditions.
