Dutch municipalities Leiden and Loon op Zand receive dementia-friendly certification

The Dutch municipalities of Leiden and Loon op Zand have officially received dementia-friendly municipality certificates from Alzheimer Nederland. These certifications are awarded to local governments that demonstrate commitment across eight key themes, including policy development, collaboration with organizations, support for caregivers, and community activities.

In Leiden, the municipality is focusing on awareness and the design of public spaces, such as creating rest points and ensuring clear walking routes during construction projects. Local officials noted that as the population ages, embedding dementia-friendly initiatives into long-term policy is essential for social inclusion.

In Loon op Zand, a collaborative effort involving various organizations and volunteers has been underway since 2016. The initiative aims to help residents with memory problems or dementia remain active participants in society for as long as possible. With approximately 500 residents living with dementia in the municipality, the program emphasizes recognizing symptoms and maintaining social and mental activity.
