Netherlands asylum crisis: municipalities struggle with housing mandates
The Netherlands is facing significant challenges in implementing the national distribution law (Spreidingswet) for asylum seekers. At least 63 municipalities are currently under government supervision for failing to meet housing quotas. Notable among these is Vlaardingen, which has declined to host asylum seekers due to a lack of capacity.
In response to the shortage of official housing, the 'Actie Onderdak' initiative, led by the Council of Churches in the Netherlands, has begun utilizing church buildings to provide temporary shelter for recognized refugees (statushouders). This move aims to free up space in asylum seeker centers (AZCs), where approximately 19,000 people are currently residing while waiting for permanent housing.
Local governments are exploring various collaborative strategies to manage the crisis. For example, the municipalities of Asten and Someren plan to work together on a shared facility, while Teylingen is coordinating with eleven other municipalities in the Holland Rijnland region. Meanwhile, the municipality of Eemsdelta has agreed to extend emergency shelter in Farmsum until 2031 to accommodate up to 150 high-potential asylum seekers.
