Amsterdam Pride Canal Parade sees hundreds of thousands, PM Rob Jetten aboard
On 1 August 2026 Amsterdam hosted the annual Pride Canal Parade, the centerpiece of World Pride 2026, with about 80 rainbow‑decorated boats cruising the historic canals. Organisers estimated that hundreds of thousands of spectators lined the waterways and gathered on bridges and nearby squares.
The event was staged under heightened security after the terrorist attack on Berlin’s Christopher Street Day parade a week earlier, which left one person dead and 29 injured. Police motorboats, a helicopter and additional patrols were deployed, and Mayor Femke Halsema said the measures would be as unobtrusive as possible.
Prime Minister Rob Jetten, the Netherlands’ first openly gay head of government, took part in the procession, sailing in a small boat and waving to the crowd. In his speech he urged young LGBTQ+ people to come out, announced the cabinet’s “Rainbow Ballot Box” agreement and said €35 million would be earmarked for safety, police cooperation and targeted outreach.
The parade also featured a variety of activist and cultural floats, and the city’s authorities expressed confidence that the celebration could proceed safely while highlighting the global pressure on LGBTQ+ rights.
