Dutch police dismantle underground banking criminal network

Dutch authorities have arrested five individuals as part of a national investigation into an underground banking network used for money laundering, forgery, and participation in a criminal organization. The operation began with the arrest of a 54-year-old primary suspect at Eindhoven Airport.

Following this initial arrest, police apprehended four additional suspects: a 35-year-old man from Deventer, a 37-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman from Apeldoorn, and a 45-year-old woman from Lelystad. Law enforcement conducted searches at five locations across Deventer, Apeldoorn, and Lelystad, seizing administrative records, data carriers, two vehicles, and cash.

The investigation, led by the National Unit for Investigation and Intervention under the authority of the National Public Prosecution Service, focuses on the movement of illicit funds, primarily derived from drug trafficking. The network allegedly facilitated underground banking, a method where large sums of cash are moved or converted into cryptocurrency without physically crossing borders, allowing criminal organizations to reinvest proceeds into assets or further criminal activities.
