Dutch Police Hunt Perpetrators of Bank Helpdesk Scam in Sommelsdijk

On 29 May 2026 an 82‑year‑old man in the Dutch village of Sommelsdijk was targeted by scammers who pretended to be employees of ABN AMRO. The callers convinced him to hand over two bank cards and a verification code, after which a woman arrived at his home, took the envelope and withdrew €2,000 from an ATM in Dirksland.

The police have reopened the investigation, stating the female suspect may be a minor and has two weeks to identify herself before her image is released. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the national crime‑tip line. The case coincides with a recent Kifid ruling that banks can no longer automatically deem fraud victims negligent, potentially easing compensation claims for similar scams.
