Netherlands fake-agent & bank scams targeting elderly

Overview

In early July, police in Leek and Waalwijk reported that impostors posing as police officers or bank staff called elderly residents, entered their homes, and stole valuables. The pattern spread nationwide, prompting a surge of reports. On 26 July, a 16-year-old pretending to be a police officer was arrested in Vught after attempting to rob a 75-year-old woman.

On 7 August, police reopened a case from 29 May in Sommelsdijk involving an 82-year-old man. Scammers posing as ABN AMRO employees convinced him to hand over two bank cards and a verification code; a female accomplice subsequently withdrew €2,000 from an ATM in Dirksland. Investigators believe the female suspect may be a minor and have two weeks to identify herself before her image is released. This case coincides with a Kifid ruling that may ease compensation claims for fraud victims.

In late August, investigations expanded to include a June 3 incident in Amersfoort, where a man used stolen banking details to make large transactions via Google Pay. Police are seeking a light-skinned male with dark hair, wearing a black vest, black trousers, a cap, and glasses with cut lenses. This follows a separate phishing scam in Dirkshorn, where a woman was contacted via SMS by someone posing as a bank employee and convinced to transfer €4,000.

Authorities continue to probe organized networks and advise seniors to remain vigilant, never sharing PINs, passwords, or personal items with anyone claiming to be police or bank staff.
