Dutch port workers call nationwide strike on September 4 over social‑security cuts

The Dutch port workers' union FNV Havens announced a national strike for 4 September, running from 11:15 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The action will halt vessel handling at the ports of Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Zeeland, causing delays to loading, unloading, cargo lashing, towage and inspections.

The strike is intended to pressure the Dutch government to withdraw a proposed €6.5 billion reduction in social‑security spending, including a plan to halve the maximum unemployment‑benefit period from two years to one. Union leader Asmae Hajjari warned that the cuts would affect workers of all ages and contract types, and could force unemployed people to rely on strict social‑assistance means. Over 700 port workers had already expressed willingness to act at a general assembly on 31 March.
