Dutch Railways to increase ticket prices by 4.7% in 2027
Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) has announced that train ticket prices and most subscriptions will increase by an average of 4.7 percent starting January 1, 2027. The price hike is intended to cover rising operational costs, inflation, and necessary investments in new rolling stock and infrastructure.
The adjustment includes an extra 1 percent point of catch-up indexation to rectify under-compensation from the 2020–2023 period. To mitigate the impact on passengers, NS is expanding its 'PrijsTijdDeal' discounts, offering up to 80 percent off during off-peak hours. Additionally, the discount will now be available via the app on the actual day of travel.
Passenger organization Rover has criticized the move, arguing that the increase exceeds inflation and may discourage travelers. Rover specifically noted that the minimum fare for short trips will rise to 3.10 euro, which they described as 'unnecessary and discouraging for the traveler.' Pricing for children and youth, including the Railrunner ticket and the Kids Vrij program, will remain unchanged.
