Heatwave forces event changes across the Netherlands and Belgium

A tropical heatwave prompted red alerts in the Netherlands and Belgium, compelling a range of public events to adapt. At the Ariënsinstituut in the Dutch diocese, the year‑end ceremony was shortened and fans installed, with a brief barbecue to end the program under high temperatures.

In Belgium, the Kanaalfeesten in Willebroek and the Zomer in het Park in Lier moved performances to shaded venues and cancelled the opening U2 concert to protect visitors and artists. Meanwhile, the Jera On Air festival in the Netherlands activated a heat plan that added extra water points, cooling zones, fans and misting systems; performers noted the oppressive conditions but the shows continued.

In Roermond, a high‑school director and colleagues slept in the school overnight, opened all windows and doors, and lowered interior temperatures from 37 °C to around 27 °C, allowing an exam week to proceed despite the heat.
