Dutch seniors face housing shortages and financial pressure

Research conducted among Dutch seniors reveals significant challenges regarding housing and financial stability. A study by Smienk involving 500 people aged 55 and older shows that 39 percent of those seeking senior housing have been on waiting lists for over five years. Additionally, 79 percent of respondents find the availability of suitable senior housing in their own region insufficient.

Many seniors remain in their current homes not by choice, but due to a lack of alternatives. Only 24 percent of respondents consider their current residence fully suitable for aging in place. Decisions to modify homes are often delayed; 34 percent of respondents wait until modifications become strictly necessary, and 29 percent feel it is not yet required.

Financially, the AOW Purchasing Power Monitor 2026 indicates that 85 percent of AOW recipients feel their purchasing power has declined over the past year. Rising costs for groceries (91 percent), healthcare (62 percent), and fuel/transport (60 percent) are primary drivers. Consequently, 69 percent of respondents have postponed purchases or activities, with 52 percent cutting back on vacations to manage daily expenses.
