Dutch SME market faces valuation gaps and gender financing disparities

The Dutch SME market is experiencing a significant valuation gap between sellers and buyers. According to the Dealsuite Acquisition Barometer for H1 2026, average EBITDA multiples are relatively high, reaching 5.0 for the general market and up to 7.0 for companies with approximately €10 million in EBITDA. However, in 42% of transaction processes, sellers perceive their company value to be too high, with a discrepancy of 23% compared to realistic market values, often leading to failed deals.

Beyond price, factors such as transferability and risk play a critical role in valuation. Buyers prioritize future cash flows and stability, favoring companies with independent management teams, standardized processes, and predictable reporting over those heavily dependent on a single owner or specific employees.

Separately, research from the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) highlights ongoing challenges for female entrepreneurs regarding access to financing. Experts suggest that deep-seated unconscious biases and traditional perceptions of entrepreneurship continue to hinder diversity in the business landscape, calling for systemic changes rather than just acknowledging the problem.
