Dutch SME financing and valuation challenges

Dutch entrepreneurs are facing significant hurdles regarding financing and market valuation. Research from the Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel) indicates that more than one-third of entrepreneurs abandon financing applications due to overly complex processes, while nearly half find the application procedures complicated. There is a noted lack of clarity regarding which financing types suit specific needs, leading two-thirds of entrepreneurs to request an independent overview of available providers.

In addition to application difficulties, the Dutch SME market is experiencing a valuation gap between buyers and sellers. Data from the Dealsuite Acquisition Barometer for H1 2026 shows that in 42% of transaction processes, sellers perceive their company value to be too high, with a discrepancy of 23% compared to realistic market values. Buyers are increasingly prioritizing companies with standardized processes and independent management teams to ensure stability.

Gender-based disparities persist within the business landscape. Reports suggest that female entrepreneurs encounter obstacles even before the application stage, with experts attributing these challenges to “deep-seated unconscious biases and traditional perceptions of entrepreneurship.”
