Dutch tourist dies in Iguaçu Falls boat accident

On 28 July 2026, a 26‑year‑old Dutch tourist, later identified as Mark Lensink, died after the Macuco Safari tourist boat capsized on the Iguaçu River near the Iguaçu Falls in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. Eight people were on board – six Dutch tourists and two crew members – and the vessel overturned around 12:20 local time. Lensink suffered a cardiac arrest, was rescued by park staff, taken by boat to the Porto Seco do Kattamaram and then to the Hospital Municipal de Foz do Iguaçu, where his death was confirmed. Two other Dutch tourists were injured and hospitalized; the pilot and co‑pilot also received medical evaluation.

The incident prompted the suspension of the Macuco Safari excursion for three days while the Brazilian Navy’s River Capitania of Paraná, the Polícia Civil and the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) conduct investigations. Recent heavy rains had raised the river’s flow to roughly 8‑9 million litres per second, several times above normal levels. The victim’s family arrived in Foz do Iguaçu on 27 July and were scheduled to depart on 30 July.
