Multiple drowning incidents in Italy claim lives of tourists and locals
A 77‑year‑old man from Vienna died after suffering a cardiac arrest while swimming off the Adriatic coast at the Italian resort of Grado. Rescue crews retrieved his granddaughter, but the grandfather could not be revived.
In Lake Como, a 45‑year‑old Dutch tourist drowned while attempting to rescue his 16‑year‑old son. The teenager was pulled to safety by a stand‑up‑paddler; the father’s body was later located on the lake floor at a depth of about 25 m by divers using sonar and underwater cameras.
In central Italy, Luigi Cavallari, the husband of Minister for the Family Eugenia Roccella, vanished after diving into Lake Vico on 27 June. Search teams of divers, motorboats, drones and sonar equipment from across Italy have been conducting continuous searches for more than a month, but no trace has been found.
