Italian lake drownings and recovered tourist

Overview

A series of drowning incidents and disappearances in Italy’s lakes and coastal waters has drawn significant attention throughout the summer of 2026.

In mid-July, a woman in her late 40s was hospitalized in critical condition after jumping into the Cava Cabassi lake in Milan’s Parco delle Cave. Local authorities noted that swimming in the park’s lakes is prohibited due to high density and low water temperatures.

Tragedy struck Lake Como on 25 July when 45-year-old Dutch tourist Mattheus Gosseling vanished while diving to rescue his 16-year-old son. While the teenager was saved by a passer-by on a stand-up paddle board, Gosseling’s body was recovered by divers at a depth of approximately 25 metres on 26 July. The lake’s extreme depths have continued to complicate rescue efforts; on 14 August, a new search was launched for 21-year-old Rayan Jeirom Baylen, who disappeared after diving from a rental boat near Lenno in an area where the bottom reaches nearly 300 metres.

Other notable incidents include the death of a 77-year-old man from Vienna following a cardiac arrest while swimming off the Adriatic resort of Grado, and the ongoing search for Luigi Cavallari, husband of Family Minister Eugenia Roccella, who vanished after diving into Lake Vico on 27 June. These events underscore persistent safety concerns and the heavy demand placed on regional rescue resources.
