Dutch towns host community markets and social meals in early June

On Sunday, 7 June, Haarlem organised the fifth edition of Sociaal & Culinair, a free street‑food event on the Nieuwe Groenmarkt. Local social organisations set up stalls offering affordable meals and information about year‑round initiatives that bring residents together, especially those with limited social contacts or finances.

The same weekend, the villages of Haren and the Hoornse Meer neighbourhood in Groningen held summer markets on Saturday, 6 June. In Haren, the market—run by Ondernemend Haren—featured local traders, food stalls, live music and street‑side hospitality from 10:00 to 17:00, with traffic restrictions in the centre. In Hoornse Meer, 25 stalls offered clothing, jewellery, ceramics, cosmetics, homemade jam and coffee on the Salvador Allendeplein from 12:00 to 17:00. Both events aimed to promote local entrepreneurship, neighbourly interaction and community spirit.
