Dutch towns move forward with new swimming pool projects

The municipality of Medemblik has awarded the design, construction and 15‑year maintenance of a new pool in Wervershoof to the West Frisian contracting consortium De Jong Ursem and Van Baaren Aannemers. The pool, planned as a target‑group facility for swimming lessons and water‑based activities, will be designed with Slangen+Koenis Architects, use aquathermie heating via the regional water board and aim to open around mid‑2028. Wethouder Gerben Gringhuis said, “It feels good that residents will again have swimming lessons in their own village.”

In Onstwedde, the community‑run ‘t Vlasmeer pool is adding a 12‑meter family slide, a new heat pump, a hybrid gas boiler and solar panels to cut energy costs. The slide, expected to open in three weeks, is intended to keep the facility attractive for young people. Stichting chairman Gerben Kiel noted, “A new slide was a long‑cherished wish and it makes me very proud; it helps us stay interesting for the youth.”
