Dutch unions suspend strikes after social security cuts are scrapped
Dutch labor unions FNV, CNV, and VCP have suspended their strikes and protest actions against proposed cuts to social security. The unions expressed satisfaction following reports that the cabinet has scrapped the planned budget cuts.
The unions had previously demanded that the government entirely abandon cost-saving measures regarding unemployment benefits and disability insurance. These disagreements led to nationwide strikes, including disruptions in public transport and various other sectors.
Following negotiations with opposition parties, including PRO and Volt, the unions have stated they are once again willing to engage in dialogue with the government. Discussions will focus on improving the WIA disability insurance scheme, prevention, and maintaining sustainable employment. CNV chairman Hans Van den Heuvel noted that after eight months of struggle, the unions' negotiating position is finally equal to that of the cabinet.
