Netherlands labor strikes over welfare cuts
Overview
The Netherlands is experiencing widespread labor strikes driven by government plans to fund NATO defense spending targets. To secure an additional 19 billion euros annually, the government has proposed social welfare reductions totaling approximately 6.5 billion euros. Industrial actions are expected to last nine days throughout September.
On September 9, a 24-hour nationwide public transport strike organized by the FNV and CNV unions paralyzed much of the country’s transit network. The FNV reported nearly 5,000 members walking off the job, while the CNV reported over 2,000 strikers. The action specifically targets cuts to unemployment (WW) and disability (WIA) benefits.
On Friday, September 12, thousands of workers in the metal and construction sectors engaged in strikes across the country. The FNV reported that participants were concentrated in the Eindhoven and Velsen-Noord regions, with approximately 1,500 and 1,300 workers expected, respectively. Major companies in Eindhoven, including ASML and DAF, monitored the potential impact. In Velsen-Noord, protesters gathered at the Tata Steel Academy, though the FNV clarified that Tata Steel employees were not participating and the company expected no operational impact. Other actions were planned for Rotterdam, Friesland, Zwolle, and the Damen shipyard in Harlingen.
The FNV, CNV, and VCP unions are conducting these actions to oppose proposed budget cuts by the VVD, CDA, and D66 parties. While leaked documents suggest the government may have canceled or delayed some cuts, unions maintain that all social security austerity measures must be withdrawn.
