Dutch universities face criticism over management and campus life

Students and faculty at Dutch universities are expressing dissatisfaction regarding management styles and campus environments. At Radboud University, tension has risen over the increasing influence of management consultants. The former dean of the Faculty of Arts recently signaled her intention to step down, citing concerns that the university's direction is being dictated by consultants rather than academics. Critics argue that a focus on hard performance indicators undermines scientific curiosity and creativity, while students report larger classes and less personal contact.

Similarly, at the University of Groningen, students have voiced complaints regarding the Zernike Campus. Many students describe the high-tech campus as feeling isolated, cold, and abstract compared to the historic city center. There is a perceived divide between the vibrant student life found in the city and the more functional, exam-oriented atmosphere of the Zernike location.
