Workplace and management issues in Dutch universities

Overview

The Netherlands Labour Authority has issued warnings to several Dutch universities, including Wageningen, Maastricht, Eindhoven, Twente, and Delft, regarding high workloads and undesirable behavior. An investigation involving over 9,000 researchers and teachers found that institutions are failing to adequately monitor risk factors such as leadership styles and hierarchical relationships.

Failure to improve could result in fines of up to 13,500 euros per violation. Following these regulatory warnings, dissatisfaction has surfaced among students and faculty regarding management and campus environments. At Radboud University, concerns have been raised about the influence of management consultants on academic direction, while students at the University of Groningen have criticized the isolated and functional atmosphere of the Zernike Campus.
