Dutch water companies target consumer behavior to reduce usage
Drinking water companies, including WMD and Vitens, are utilizing behavioral insights to encourage customers to reduce water consumption. The initiative aims to mitigate usage peaks during periods of heat and drought, supported by research from KWR.
Strategic advisors note that water conservation relies heavily on awareness and behavioral changes. While significant savings can be achieved through shorter showers, companies are initially focusing on easier adjustments, such as turning off taps while brushing teeth, to integrate into daily routines. WMD is also offering water scans to large business clients to identify efficiency opportunities.
Research involving nearly 1,000 participants indicates that 73 percent of Dutch citizens are willing to spread out their water usage if requested by providers. Success appears to depend on a sense of personal responsibility and the perceived practicality of the suggested changes.
