Dutch woman begins laser removal of 250 forced tattoos

A 53‑year‑old Dutch woman identified as Joke is having the first of 250 tattoos, imposed by an abusive ex‑boyfriend, removed with laser treatment. The tattoos, many bearing the ex’s name, covered her face and body. The removal is being carried out by the foundation Spijt van Tattoo in Rotterdam, which offers free laser therapy to victims of forced tattooing and plans to expand its services internationally. Seven laser sessions have already been completed, starting with the face.

Andy Han, director of Spijt van Tattoo, described how the victim was isolated, financially drained and coerced into the extensive tattooing before she gathered the strength to leave the abusive relationship and seek treatment.
