Dutch workforce shows openness to switching to labor-shortage sectors
Research from Indeed indicates that nearly 80 percent of Dutch workers would consider switching to sectors facing labor shortages. However, significant barriers prevent many from making the transition, including financial uncertainty (31 percent), age (26 percent), and a lack of clarity regarding which roles align with their existing skill sets (20 percent).
Workers also expressed concerns regarding the future of their current roles, citing the potential impact of artificial intelligence (24 percent), economic uncertainty (23 percent), and increasing workloads (18 percent). Notably, 21 percent of respondents believe they will eventually hold a job that does not yet exist, a figure that rises to 35 percent among those aged 18 to 24.
In a related trend regarding workforce stability, companies like Alliander are addressing the loss of expertise caused by retiring employees. As experienced technicians and IT specialists exit the workforce, organizations are exploring ways to retain knowledge, such as encouraging employees to continue working after reaching the state pension age (AOW). This approach aims to mitigate the risks to continuity and quality that arise when specialized knowledge leaves an organization.
