DVLA clarifies delinquency charges for expired driver’s licences
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has issued a clarification regarding the legal basis for delinquency charges applied to motorists who fail to renew their driver’s licences before they expire. The move follows concerns raised by clients regarding fees imposed at service centres.
According to the Authority, the charges are mandated by the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (L. I. 2512) and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L. I. 2519). Under these regulations, licences must be renewed every two years and replaced six years after the initial issue date. Drivers are encouraged to renew within one month of expiry to ensure the renewal takes effect from the expiry date.
Specific delinquency fees include GH¢52 for one sticker and GH¢104 for two stickers. For longer delays, charges for being seven to 12 months overdue are GH¢75, one to two years overdue are GH¢111, and more than two years overdue are GH¢148. The DVLA noted that licence holders must renew in person, pass an eye test, and provide evidence of training from a certified institution. To assist motorists, the Authority sends SMS reminders one month and two weeks prior to expiry.
