Two Greek‑owned tankers, the Malta‑flagged Kavomaleas and the Liberia‑flagged VLCC Acheloos, were struck by unknown projectiles while transiting the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz near Kumzar, Oman. The hits caused fires and engine‑room damage; crew members were evacuated safely and the vessels were left adrift.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the ships violated Tehran’s navigation rules and were “exploded” for using the unsafe route, while the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed the incidents and urged vessels to proceed with caution. The attacks come amid a renewed US‑Iran conflict that has seen ten consecutive nights of US airstrikes on Iranian targets and reciprocal Iranian actions.

The violence has precipitated a dramatic collapse in maritime traffic through the strait, with daily transits down nearly 90 % from pre‑conflict levels, oil‑transfer operations in the Gulf of Oman slowing sharply, and broader supply‑chain effects on the mining sector. The incident underscores the strategic importance of the Hormuz corridor for global energy and commodity flows.
