Dynapenic obesity linked to nearly double mortality risk
Researchers have identified a specific combination of physical traits that significantly increases mortality risk. A study involving 5,674 adults in the United States, tracked over nearly seven years, suggests that the combination of excess abdominal fat and relatively low grip strength—a condition referred to as dynapenic obesity—is linked to a mortality risk nearly twice as high as those without these characteristics.
While abdominal diameter alone was not significantly associated with mortality risk, the relationship between low grip strength relative to body size and death was substantial. Participants with lower grip strength in proportion to their body weight faced an approximately 60% higher mortality risk. This association remained consistent regardless of age, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, or existing comorbidities.
