Health risks associated with dynapenic obesity
Overview
Research has increasingly linked dynapenic obesity—a condition characterized by excess abdominal fat and low muscle strength—to severe health outcomes.
Initial studies involving the UK Biobank found that individuals aged 55 and older with dynapenic obesity faced a 67% higher risk of dementia. This risk was particularly pronounced in males, individuals under 65, and those who are non-ε4-carriers of the APOE gene. Additionally, research has explored how social determinants of health influence dementia risk perception among Black adults.
Subsequent findings from a United States study involving over 5,000 adults suggest that dynapenic obesity is also associated with a significantly higher mortality risk. The study indicated that the combination of excess abdominal fat and low grip strength is linked to a mortality risk nearly twice as high as those without these traits. Specifically, participants with lower grip strength relative to their body weight faced an approximately 60% higher mortality risk, a finding that remained consistent across various ages, socioeconomic statuses, and lifestyles.
